Late for the Sky Production Company began making specialty board games in 1984. Their first game was MIAMIOPOLY based on Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. Company founder and president Robyn Wilson was a 1980 graduate of Miami University and her time spent there served as the inspiration for the first game. The title list soon spread to around 80 major U.S. colleges. Each game is a walk around a specific university and the board spaces are the campus buildings, local businesses and areas that are special to that school. The games were found in campus bookstores and specialty shops, and eventually in department stores and gift stores nationwide.
In 1992, Late for the Sky branched out of the college market and made another specialty game, BIBLEOPOLY. It was immediately popular and was available only in Christian Bookstores. The object of BIBLEOPOLY is to be the first to build a church in one of the Bible cities. BIBLEOPOLY is the one of the best selling Christian games of all time.
The success in the college market prompted the entry into a new market – games designed around major cities. These games are filled with local landmarks, icons, and traditions that present the character of cities all over the U.S. and Canada.
The idea of making a real estate trading game is not new. Many have been made for cities and communities for years. CITY IN-A-BOX games are different because most other real estate game makers sell the board spaces as advertising. The advertising tends to hurt the integrity of the game because the spaces are aligned according to the amount of advertising paid to the game’s manufacturers. The Late for the Sky brand of games are not advertising vehicles and consequently, it is a better game because original, well known, city landmarks are included to present the best representation of the city as possible. Late for the Sky updates their CITY IN-A-BOX games all the time and there are nearly 50 versions now available.
In 1997, Late for the Sky moved into a new 60,000 square foot building where they began their own complete manufacturing facility. The company handles everything from design, printing and manufacturing, and assembly and distribution in house. In 2000, they shiped their 3,000,000th game and begin the research on the next group of specialty games that will make great gifts for years to come.
