Texas Holdem Poker
(Submitted by Andrew Perry)

Texas Holdem (also written as hold ‘em) poker is a variation of the card game poker. The game is played with two cards dealt face down to each player and then five community cards placed face-up by the dealer. Today Texas Hold em Poker is the most popular poker variant due to its simplicity and because skill is more important than luck.

Little is known about the origin of Texas Holdem poker, though the Texas State Legislature officially recognizes Robstown, Texas, as the game’s birthplace. Texas Holdem Poker was introduced to Las Vegas in 1967, and for several years, only the Golden Nugget Casino offered the game. The game gained recognition after the movie “Rounders” hit the theaters. The airing of World Series of Poker on TV and additional television and Internet exposure helped Texas Holdem poker’s popularity surge in the early 2000s.
