Twister, a “bend-and-stretch” party/parlor game played on a large vinyl mat on the floor, was a runaway hit after being demonstrated on the Johnny Carson show by the well-endowed Ava Gabor in a V-top.
Players spin a spinner which tells them which body part (hand, foot) has to be placed on which color circle on the mat. The player assumes and holds that position while the next player spins and gets into position around (under or over) the other player.
The game was released by Milton Bradley in 1966 and has been around ever since.
TWISTER FOR DOLLS
by Bruce Whitehill
1997
Can you imagine playing on a Twister board 14” x 20”?
That’s what you get in a box smaller than 6” x 5” in a new, miniature edition of Twister, made for the Pleasant Company. That’s the company that produces “The American Girls Collection,” which includes dolls and accouterments, clothing and books for girls only, all sold through the Pleasant Company catalog. The game is part of the “Slumber Party Gear and Bear” package that includes the game, nonskid doll socks, a mini Magic 8 Ball, and Mini Miss AG Bear, all for $18. The game, complete with spinner and instruction sheet, is sure to become a collector’s item. And as Ava would say, “It’s just ‘dolling’!”
MORE TWISTER STUFF
TWISTER has proved to be so popular that there have been many “accessories” added to the line, including mugs, mini-Twister key chains, a game pen, and so forth. One premium came with a mat whose 4 x 4 colored circles contained football helmets on which there were logos of Reese’s, Hershey’s, Twizzlers, and Hershey’s Kisses; also a large NFL shield logo next to title on the border. Pictured here are just a few of the TWISTER additions and accessories.
